Sometimes what makes color work aren't the colors at all but the contrast between them. By desaturating someone’s art you can see the values. A lot of artist work in black and white first. If your piece works in black and white it will be even better in color. If it doesn’t work in black and white it will never work in color. I use the iPad app Procreate to turn the colors on and off.
