The Succow Stiftung in Germany has been restoring the Sernitzmoor peatland since 2014 through the "toMOORow" project. This initiative aims to restore peatlands for climate benefits and local economic opportunities. Peatland marshes act as effective carbon sinks, but many have been drained across Europe for farming. Dry and exposed to oxygen, peat become a powerful emitter of greenhouse gases. In Germany, peatlands cover 7% of agricultural land but contribute to 37% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Rewetting peatlands prevents emissions and allows for paludiculture, including water buffalo farming, cattail insulation, and reed pellet production for paper. | May 31, 2023 |
