We KNOW who killed Wirt in Diablo II Resurrected.
Wirt the peg legged boy was the only named villagers body found, upon the players return to the decimated town of tristram. But how did he die?
Well, by unlocking the Secret Cow Level using wirts own peg leg, we see that his death may also be the cause of his own retribution beyond the grave as the Cows bestiary reads:
“Given sentience by Diablo and driven mad by the incessant prodding they suffered at the hands of the heroes that swarmed to Tristram, these hell-spawned bovines seek to destroy those who abused them when they were docile and defenseless.”
This of course is referring to the many prods the player can give the cows in Diablo 1. The second half of the flavour text is damning evidence these now hell bound cows killed wirt, as it reads:
“Armed with vicious halberds, they lie in wait just on the other side of a secret portal that is opened with the "help" of their first victim…”
