Linux Mint can be downloaded for free from:

You can choose any of the following editions of Linux Mint:
Cinnamon (The nicest looking, but also the most demanding on your PC's resources)
MATE (More stable, light weight, and robust for less powerful systems)
XFCE (The lightest one of them all!)
(Correction: the virtual box guest additions is not that hard to install, but if you use the XFCE edition, you will need to go through some additional steps to install the guest additions.)
