Sight words build confidence. By learning to read some simple words by sight children increase their reading vocabularies. Furthermore, once a child knows a small group of words by sight, these can be used to explain some of the rules of English. For example, if a child knows the word ‘bike’, when they begin to learn the busy e (also known as bossy e or magic e) rule, you can refer to their knowledge of bike for an example of the rule in action.
This video is also suitable for parents of children learning English as a second language – especially if the parents’ English is not strong. An initial exposure to these 16 words, spoken in clear, native English, is a good start to the child’s adventure with the world’s most significant language!
