Certainly not optimal yet, but works very well. The electronics is way simpler then a QCW coil where the gates need to be turned on and off in synch with the ramped input.
The principle of operation for this particular coil is that the gates of the mosfets or IGBTs in the ZVS circuit are actively driven at the resonant frequency of the coil system. When a ramped voltage is applied to the ZVS circuit, the Tesla coil comes to life with nice sword sparks. High frequency coils around 300kHz or greater and ramped inputs promote the formation of these sword sparks. This video is just a test run. An arduino is used to generate the ramped output (as PWM signal) which turns on an off an IGBT switch. The PWM output is passed through a low pass LC filter to generate the ramp. The ramped voltage supplies the ZVS circuit. Some issues encountered with this preliminary setup are stray RF which interferes with the proper functioning of the Arduino. A fellow YouTuber Jerry Miller ( Arc Angel Tesla Coil) has helped me a lot collaborating on this project.
The video immediately previous to this one is a small ramped ZVS but with gates spontaneously oscillating and not being actively driven. The major difference between spontaneously oscillating coil and actively driven ( on gates) is much higher voltages and much more power can be pushed through through the coil when the gates are being actively driven. To actively drive the gates, use a GDT so one gate is turned on while the other is turned off and vice versa. The high frequency UF4007 diodes and the 10k pull down resistors need to be removed for this mode of operation. Need to have the gates partially turned on by applying 12V to both gates via 100 Ohm ceramic wire wound resistors using an external power supply. That’s the basics!
