Bodywork, like what Gabby does, helps to relieve stress or tension in the body. This tension can be caused by intrauterine positioning prior to birth, trauma during birth such as from vacuum or forceps, being in the birth canal for an extended period of time, or consistently laying with the head in one direction. Tension in the body can also be caused internally from tongue tie. The muscles of the head, neck, and jaw attempt to compensate for the tethering of the tongue and the tension is often felt through the whole body. The goal of bodywork is to have the muscle and tissue in the affected area be free of tension. It helps by making the body better able to move. So for breastfeeding, bodywork helps bring the muscles and tissues back into alignment, return the body to symmetry, and move more freely, including opening the jaw widely, tilting the head to a certain angle, relaxing the shoulders and neck, etc. It helps breastfeeding work better, be more efficient and less work for the baby. The baby’s body can relax and it makes positioning less of a struggle.
