In this Abaqus tutorial, Lifu Wang guides us in the modeling of a three piece shaft connected by a single cruciform. The approach utilized is "tying" the three parts together, and then applying a torsional load. While contact could be used, this is a reasonable approach to determining the highest stress within the connector piece. In addition, the model demonstrates how to use a coarse model away from the region of concern and a fine mesh in the region where failure is expected to occur.
