There is a difference between Ethology and Ethnology. Ethology is the science of animal behavior. It is a branch of zoology that studies the behavior of non-human animals. The first modern Ethologist was Charles Darwin who studied and explored the expressions of emotions in Animals and noted his research in his book The Expression of Emotions In Man and Animals.

Humans and mice don't look alike, but both species are mammals and are biologically very similar.

Almost all of the genes in mice share functions with the genes in humans. That means we develop in the same way from egg and sperm, and have the same kinds of organs (heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, etc.) as well as similar circulatory, reproductive, digestive, hormonal, and nervous systems. These similarities make it possible for scientists to study the physiology of mice to glean information about how human beings grow, develop diseases, and age.

Ethnology, on the other hand, is an academic discipline that compares and analyzes the characteristics of different peoples and the relationships between them (compare cultural, social, or sociocultural anthropology). While this difference is deep, it is also true that human beings are also animals and mammals. Some mammals resemble human beings too closely at the genetic level. Humans and mice don't look alike, but both species are mammals and are biologically very similar.

This is the reason why many times, newly found medicines are first tested on mice because mice are considered excellent models for humans. However, genetics is a totally different branch of science than Ethology or Ethnology. Yet, sometimes, these lines of differences are blurred out and conclusions are drawn while observing the results of various studies going on in these different realms of research and studies.

One such incident happened from 1968 to 1972 when American ethologist and behavioral researcher J. B. Calhoun performed his infamous experiment titled Mice Universes, the most famous of which was Universe 25.
