Linda Lavin, the Tony and Golden Globe Award-winning actress who rose to fame in the long-running CBS sitcom Alice, died unexpectedly in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 29. She was 87 and had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Born October 15, 1937 in Portland, Maine, Linda Lavin began her Broadway career in the 1960s, appearing in the musical comedies Oh, Kay!, A Family Affair, It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman, and the play Last of the Red Hot Lovers, which earned her the first of six Tony Award nominations. Her one Tony win came in 1987 for Best Actress in a Play for Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound.
