Instead of a traditional Let's Play episode today, I'm going through the first boss fight in the game for the benefit of new players, or those of you who are just curious about the mechanics of the fight.
I'm going to break this down into two phases, we'll call them Starting Phase and Enraged Phase. In Skul the Hero Slayer, Yggdrasil is a giant tree (Ent) who fell victim to the corruption of the dark quartz (the gem stuck in his head). You'll need to incapacitate Yggdrasil to enter into the castle, which is Chapter 2.
STARTING PHASE:
It's important to know that Yggdrasil has three main attacks in this phase.
1.) The Fist Bump. (2:05) Yggdrasil will ball his fists in the air, grunt/tremble, and then slam them down. You can simple dodge away as his fists come crashing down where you were just standing. It may take a few times but I know you can get the timing down easily.
2.) The Wave. (1:40) Yggdrasil will pull his hands off screen and then swipe them all the way from one side to the other. You'll want to stay close to his face during these attacks, as it give you the most time to react to an incoming swipe, than if you were standing near the edge of the screen where you'd have little-to-no time to react. You can double jump over these abilities, dodge through them or use any other movement ability to get yourself out of harms way.
3.) Ball Blaster. (1:50) Yggdrasil summons energy from the dark quartz that manifests itself in energy balls. They will always be aimed at you, but if you hug the side of the screen (opposite positioning of where you would be for a Wave attack) you can easily just time your hops to miss each orb.
ENRAGED PHASE:
Skul the Hero Slayer's first boss becomes enraged when you wipe out his first health bar. His attacks during the second phase of this boss fight are more intense but very similar to what you already dealt with in the first phase.
1.) Enraged Fist Bump. (3:17) Similar to the Starter Phase, but this time around he follows up the first fist slam with a second fist slam. Roll out of the way of both to avoid damage. (It'll be easier if you have upgraded Skul with some Quartz, talk to the Witch to upgrade).
2.) Enraged Ball Blaster. (3:57) Again, similar to the first phase; the only difference is the orbs are randomly summoned in the air, they don't originate from Yggdrasil. If your skull is fast enough, you may be able to simply run around on the ground to avoid this attack.
3.) Enraged Slam. This ability replaces the wave from the first phase. When the ground becomes highlighted in red, Yggdrasil will roar and then slam his arms down into the ground. If you're touching the ground during impact you'll take damage. So you'll want to time your jumps just right to avoid taking damage.
There you go! It's honestly not as intimidating as it may seem! Upgrading your Skul with Dark Quartz will probably make a huge difference for your survivability. It might take some time to save up, but it's totally worth it.
