In The City We Became, four-time Hugo Award winner and New York Times bestseller N.K. Jemisin imagines a New York City that is protected by avatars but whose future hangs in the balance when an ancient evil threatens to capitalize on its divisions in order to destroy it. She finishes the story of the city and its avatars in The World We Make. A new candidate for mayor wields the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" and may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself. Meanwhile the ancient enemy’s machinations threaten the entire universe, and New York must join with the other Great Cities in order to bring it down for good.

N.K. Jemisin speaks about her tale of identity, resistance, magic and myth with the one and only LeVar Burton.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

N(ora). K. Jemisin is a New York Times-bestselling author of speculative fiction short stories and novels, who lives and writes in Brooklyn, NY. In 2018, she became the first author to win three Best Novel Hugos in a row. She has also won a Nebula Award, two Locus Awards, and is a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.

LeVar Burton is an actor (Roots, Star Trek: The Next Generation), director, and author. To library folk and other bookworms, however, he is likely best known as the host and executive producer of Reading Rainbow. Debuting in 1983 and remaining on the air until 2009, the show encouraged '80s, '90s, and '00s kids’ curiosity and love of reading—from its signature theme song to Burton’s now hashtagged catchphrase (#bydhttmwfi “but you don’t have to take my word for it”).
