345 - We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie
After listening to the albums for these so many times I finally decided to snag a copy of Katamari. I've been wanting to play this game for a really long time and it's exactly as goofy as I want it to be, complete with silly soundtrack and fun psychedelic visuals.
Katamari is a collectathon game, the goal is to collect as much of a specific thing as you can, but the limitations are very freeform much like the music. Your sessions will each start on a map with everything already laid out in delightful 3D renders with flappy birds and grass and windchimes and bacon. The world is made up of of all these different assets that on their own are just a funky little virtual object, but each thing is also inside a list of large to small, and based on the size of your starting Katamari orb, you'll be limited to things that are the same diameter +/- 10%. It sounds complex, but basically you run over anything smaller than you and add it to the ball.
Once your ball is big enough you can collect anything that's within that same ratio, and what starts out as a ball picking up paperclips and matchbooks eventually leads to cups and dishes, then houses and buses, and it keeps going from there.
Everything is backed by an adorable jazz fusion album with drops into everything from folk music to dubstep, and the wildest part is that it never feels out of place.
