In the 1990s Microsoft was developing their Microsoft Office suite.

They allegedly tried to obfuscate their implementation so that 3rd parties would not be able to reverse engineer it.

Apache developers took this as a challenge and after some time were able to successfully reverse engineer the entire suite.

They then released Apache POI in 2001 which is a java library that allows you to read and write Microsoft office file formats, which means the Microsoft efforts were not very effective.

POI stands for “Poor Obfuscation implementation” because the industry standard in the tech space when you are victorious is to shit all over your opponent.
