Students are curious about machines, everyday appliances and solving practical problems, but hesitant to take the first step. That is one of the reasons, the university offers Bootstrap program to all the freshers irrespective of the branch of study, in their very first week. For the students, Bootstrap is an interesting and enriching introduction to the world of engineering. It has proved to be effective in kindling a serious interest in the machines and processes. It motivates students to try to understand the working of appliance and go ahead to set it right when the system stops working. The exposure helps students to make the most of what they study. This has also encouraged the staff to relate to the practical aspects as they teach. The five-day program, July 31 to August 4, has skill building sessions on mechanical and electrical engineering, electronics, design thinking and social awareness.
Bootstrap prepares the students to take the plunge and do things right away, be it repair of an iron box, changing the wheel, programming the robot or start working on a problem right away. Richa and Vedant found the Mechanical Bootstrap interesting. Richa was now confident about taking the spanner and start removing the wheel with the punctured tyre herself. They could now understand the jargons of ABS and powertrain which they had read and heard in advertisements. In electrical Bootstrap, Sirisha and Siddhanth got to open up an iron box, ceiling fan and mixer which they had not attempted before. Now they know what can go wrong with these appliances and are confident of repairing them. Siddhanth had read about Tesla cars and now could relate to magnetic fields, electricity and the rotations. Electronics Bootstrap got Srivarna enthused about robotics and its application in helping the blind. Akhilesh had seen the use of robots in manufacturing and was quick to realize what goes behind it and found that all of it was doable with programming. They had heard about micro-controllers but could now see micro-controllers being used in a practical application. Pradhumn after the session on Design Thinking found himself open to thinking about more ideas and not just stick to one, when solving a problem. Sukanya had never thought that she could think creatively and now she thinks that being an entrepreneur would be great. Both of them are eager to apply the skills they learnt in the projects they will take up. Pranav was glad to have been part of Social Awareness Bootstrap as he visited a government school to clean up the ground and set up the volleyball court, paint the walls and taught a girl to dance. Nupur was happy to plant saplings and erect a fence and painted colorful circles on the walls inside the classroom.
It is the endeavor of the university and teachers to sustain and deepen students’ interest in solving real world problems throughout the program and courses they choose.
