Bridie Gallagher: ‘They’re Cutting the Corn in Creeslough Today’

It is said that on the first day of a journey to New York in the late 19th century the last glimpses of Ireland were being observed from the decks of their ship by passengers of all ages and social classes - they hailed from many parts of Ireland. Percy French heard one group of young emigrants talking about the country they were leaving behind. One of them said wistfully:

“They’re cutting the corn in Creeslough today…”

Percy French was touched to the heart by this comment. This great Irish song was the result.
