Science Policy in the Age of Trump and Beyond: Federal Priorities in Astronomy and Space Science
We find ourselves at a time of upheaval of many longstanding norms, some due to recent events and some due to long-developing trends. Washington policy maker support for astronomy and the rest of science runs both with and counter to these larger societal forces. This talk will examine this upheaval, its implications for science, and what you can do about it.
Dr. Joel Parriott has been the Director of Public Policy and Deputy Executive Officer at the American Astronomical Society (AAS) since 2012. He brought to the AAS a decade of experience at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), where he was responsible for overseeing the budgets of the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy Office of Science on behalf of the President. Prior to his service at OMB, Joel spent four years at the National Academies, where he staffed numerous high-level advisory committee studies on policy issues in physics and astronomy. He earned his doctorate in astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Michigan.
