your location
IP address
search history
context of your messages
what your viewing
age range, gender
biometric information
face & voiceprints
mobile carrier
device model, and OS
network type
device ID (IMEI)
installed apps
battery state
audio settings
and more....
There are an estimated 147M active Tok Tok users in the US, and an estimate of 267M devices where Tik Tok has been used. If Tik Tok is collecting information such as your device ID called an IMEI Number, then I would consider this to be a national security risk by itself. Just by knowing this one piece of data, its possible to block the use of that device on any carrier around the world and cause a backlog of millions of people attempting to get their device off a blacklist.
Having an adversarial government with potential access to shut down economic activity for weeks seems like a risk that should be avoided. The problem is not just the device ID, there are so many hacks that Tik Tok could enable including location tracking which they do already, DNS hijacking, and so many more, I just don’t want to educate people on how to use this against people and make it worse.
So what should you do —
If you have used Tik Tok on a device already, then I would consider making that device your fun toy for Social Media apps and make your new device your primary mobile phone and never put Tik Tok or Instagram on the new device. If you have the means you may want to consider using a secure cellphone, with limited apps where data collection hooks have been removed from Google, Apple and Microsoft.
