How to Move / Migrate a Plex Server from a Windows PC to Another
In this video, I show you how to migrate a Plex Server, including all libraries and metadata, from one PC to another with a higher passmark. While this video is applicable to any Windows-to-Windows transfer of a Plex Server, I am going from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016.
Please note that I make an assumption in my video that the username on the old machine is the same as the username on the new one. If they are different, you will need to make a change in the imported registry setting for \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\LocalAppDataPath, changing the path to reflect the new username. Thanks to Reuben Tarran. Update: this may not be required anymore, but I will need to verify with others.
► Note: at the 2:15 mark, go ahead and launch the server. That will create the LOCALAPPDATA folder that you need later on in the video. You can then exit the server (right-click on the Plex icon in bottom right corner, and click exit).Thanks to rblnr.
► Note: after you migrate your server, you may want to re-check the "Empty trash automatically after every scan" checkbox, as seen at the 2:37 mark. Thanks to fildon123.
► Note: If you move from Windows7 to Windows10 and receive the message “Plex Media Server was unable to open its media database” (even if you uninstall and reinstall), go into the “AppData/Local/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Database” folder, delete all the files there and paste the ones from the older pc once again. ► Note: Before you merge the reg file on the new PC at the 5:19 mark, please BACK UP your registry!
