Taking off from the shore of beautiful Bowman Lake, the drive to this trailhead can be enough of a grand adventure. The northwestern region of Glacier National Park is worth the drive to get there, making sure a stop at for goodies at the Polebridge Mercantile is part of the trek.
This trail is accessible only part of the year, since the road to the trailhead is six miles one way and closed when winter conditions dictate. So, expect only June - October access but check the Glacier NPS website for road closures.
The trail itself is initially flat and through the woods, but once the junction to the lookout has begun, the trail climbs steadily for the remainder of the hike. Much of it is in the trees, but the final two miles towards the top are where the views are, and they are worth the effort.
The lookout itself tends to be manned in the summer months, meaning it is at the discretion of whomever is manning it whether you can go up it or not, but in the fall months it is accessible. In the late summer, huckleberries typically line the trail, an added benefit to going in the warmer months. Larches are prominent in this area as well, so a Fall hike timed right will reward with spectacular color.
The North Fork area of Glacier National Park has become more traveled of late, leading to the need to restrict access to the area. So, before trying to access the trailhead to this hike, make sure you know whether reservations are required first. Again, the Glacier NPS website is the best place to get information, but usually an earlier start (ie through the Ranger Station gate prior to 6am) will get you plenty of parking, a beautiful sunrise, and the trail all to yourself.
