Art is subjective.

Wouldn’t you agree?

At first glance it seems like an obvious statement - the things you like in media are probably very different from the things I like - even if we watched the exact same show, listen to the exact same album, or played the exact same game.

Yet, infamously, a lot of people don’t see it that way.

It’s a common thing, to toss around phrases like objectively good or objectively bad in regards to storytelling, as if these subjective feelings about media can be measured with numbers and calculations.

Or, hell, it’s common to even come up with objective interpretations of an artist’s work, objective, final answers of what they meant, or what the “real” allegory was - especially now, with the internet, when we can just go on twitter and flat out ask them what their intended meaning was behind their symbolism. Or go on TVTropes, if you hate yourself.

When every game has to have a theory behind it, when every ambiguity is a mystery box that must be solved, or when every symbol has to have rigid definitions, we treat stories as if they’re puzzles. Not art pieces. We lose the beauty that comes in our own interpretation.

So, what then do we make of a game that rejects the concept of objectivity itself? A work of art where even the most basic and fundamental facts are clearly overflowing with meaning, yet are still destined to be interpreted differently by all those who engage with it?

Well. Let’s talk about that. My name is Ruby Seals, and we need to talk about SIGNALIS.
