Area is the number of squares needed to cover a flat surface without gaps or overlaps. Area is measured with unit squares, such as 1 inch square units, 1 centimeter square units, 1 foot square units, and so on. A square unit has four equal side lengths of 1 unit each, like 1 inch each, or 1 centimeter each, etc. To find the area of a figure, we count the number of unit squares inside the figure. The base of a two-dimensional figure can be any side. It's written as the letter b in the formula we use to find area. The height is the measure of a perpendicular line segment from the base to the top of the figure and is written with the letter h. For rectangles, we can think of the base (b) and the height (h) as the length (L) and width (w) because length and width are perpendicular. We can find the area of a square by using the formula A= s X s, which means area is equal to a side times a side. Perimeter is the distance around the edges of a figure. Area is the number of square units we need to cover the surface of a figure. We solve three word problems involving the area of rectangles or squares.
