Create PPT from Outline in Word

Before you create a presentation, it's always recommended to start with an outline. An outline or sketch helps you think through the content of your presentation and arrange them in logical order. You can also use an outline to figure out what slides you'll have in your presentation and the content of those slides. The other advantage of having an outline is that you can focus on the content of the presentation without mixing it with the formatting.

But once you've created your outline, you might want to quickly move it to a PowerPoint presentation. Well, I've got good news for you.

You can create a PowerPoint presentation in one click, if you have your outline in a Word document or even a text file. In this video, I'll show you how.

Let's first look at how to create a PowerPoint presentation from a Word document. If you've seen my Word tutorials, you'll notice that I've mentioned the importance of using styles in most of them. To apply a style, simply write the text you want and click the Heading 1 or Heading 2 buttons in the Sytles section. You can click on View, Navigation Pane to see your outline. Alternatively, you can click on View, Outline, and then add your Heading 1 and Heading 2 elements. After you're done adding a bunch of Heading 1 and Heading 2 elements, close your Word document.

Then go to PowerPoint, and on the Insert menu, click the arrow icon next to New Slide, and choose Slides from Outline. PowerPoint will create a complete presentation for you with the Heading 1 elements as the slide titles and the Heading 2 elements as the bullet points. You can then go ahead and format your presentation by choosing Design and applying a theme to your presentation. Of course, you can make other adjustments as well.

Let's now look at how to create a PowerPoint presentation from a text file. For Heading 1 elements that you want as your titles of slides, don't indent the text. For Heading 2 elements that you want as bullet points, simply indent the text by pressing the tab key, then save and close the text file.

After this, go to PowerPoint, and on the Insert menu, click the arrow icon next to New Slide, and choose Slides from Outline. PowerPoint will create a presentation for you with the Heading 1 Heading 2 elements as specified in your text file.

This is a very quick way to creating your slides if you already have an outline and a theme in mind for your presentation. The bonus is that this outline can also serve as your slide notes and don't contain any formatting elements, so you can focus on the content as you rehearse your presentation.

I hope this video was useful. Be sure to check out my other tutorials on Word, PowerPoint and Excel on this channel. As always, thanks for watching.
