Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: Please help me with better knowing how and where chords & melodies can re-locate on the guitar. I find that melodies and chords can wind-up as exactly the same sounding in different places. Is there any kind of logical system to this?
Taylor -- North Conway, NH. USA
A: The guitar neck does have a logical mapping approach, we'll call it a system. Once you become familiar with how this neck system operates in regard to it's layout, it will be quite a lot easier to see how chords & melodies can re-locate to other possible positions. One thing to be aware of is that, the sound of the chord or melodic idea will change as it re-locates. This is due to a difference in both string length, as well as, string diameter. So, the notes you play in one area can & will take on a different tonal and dynamic response when they're moved elsewhere. To help you get a clear concept of this, watch the video lesson.
