For nearly a decade, Mazda fans have been dreaming of a new rotary-powered flagship performance coupe. While we may not get exactly what we desire, a talented few have taken matters into their own hands, creating stunning digital renders of what they envision as the 'Mazda RX-9'.
Each image brings a unique interpretation of the RX-9, showcasing subtle differences and varying degrees of aggression. These designs stand in stark contrast to the electric-drive Mazda Iconic SP concept unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show.
The Iconic SP concept sets the stage for Mazda's future performance cars, featuring two electric motors that produce a combined 272kW, supported by a compact lithium-ion battery pack. Interestingly, it includes a twin-rotor flex-fuel rotary engine that functions solely as a range-extending power generator.
Mazda's forthcoming sports car is expected to deliver impressive performance and sharp dynamics, but there’s some uncertainty about how die-hard RX fans will respond to its innovative powertrain. The rotary engine, which has no direct connection to the wheels, is a radical departure from tradition.
On a positive note, the Iconic SP concept shares a similar size with the beloved MX-5, rather than the larger RX-8. This compact size promises an exhilarating driving experience, reminiscent of Mazda's iconic sports cars
