After waking from surgery and realizing he could not feel anything below his hips, Ken Evans set to work on rehabilitation. Through the use of a HydroWorx pool, Ken was able to slowly rebuild feeling and strength in his legs until he could walk again.
In this video, a recovered Ken takes us through his typical physical therapy routine to show the unique benefits a HydroWorx pool can provide for people recovering from spinal surgery and other lower extremity procedures. Ken's surgery was to correct a spinal injury in L3, which severely impacted his lower body motor function. After the nine-hour surgery, he was devastated to wake up and discover he was essentially paralyzed. Thankfully, his doctors knew of a tool that could keep him from becoming paraplegic — HydroWorx therapy pools.
Ken starts with some simple walking on the underwater treadmill. These treadmills come standard in all HydroWorx pools. They allow users to walk, run and jump, thanks to the low-impact nature of being underwater. The water can displace weight that a user might not be able to bear when walking on land, making it easier and safer for them to begin the recovery process much faster after an injury or surgery.
HydroWorx jets circulate the water to create a current for massage or resistance training, allowing patients to build their strength more quickly. You also get a glimpse of the underwater video monitoring system, a helpful tool for physical therapists and clinicians to help adjust patient exercises in real-time.
Before receiving surgery, Ken was a ski instructor. Now, thanks to his aquatic therapy program, he's able to get back to doing what he loves. Without the assistance of a HydroWorx pool, Ken's recovery would have been much longer and harder. Because he was able to start rehabilitation almost immediately after his surgery, Ken reached levels of wellness similar to where he was before his procedure.
