She suffered no-nonsense but had a sense of humor and knew how to make her costars laugh. It’s the kind of energy that is sorely missed once it’s gone. She recently died peacefully in the hospital surrounded by her family.
She may have been a private woman, but she made plenty of friends. It seems that all her co-stars and critics have nothing but positive things to say about her. Maggie is most known for two major roles; Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and the Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey. The casts of both franchises poured out messages of tributes after her death. They said how grateful they were to work with such a legend. Fans also raised their wands at Harry Potter World in Universal Orlando in her honor.
It didn’t matter if the roles were for smaller projects, either. Maggie had a presence that was felt in everything she worked on. Whoopi Goldberg never wanted to do Sister Act 3 without her as Mother Superior. She reached out with a tribute once she found out that wouldn’t be possible.
Her other co-stars commented on her unique blend of a dry wit and an intimidating presence. Many were as nervous about working with such a legend, but they were all glad that they got the unique opportunity to do so.
