Basemaps are authoritative maps that are assembled and curated by Esri. Both vector and imagery-based basemap content are updated approximately every three weeks with any new data that is provided by authoritative sources or the greater community. When a new basemap is added to a map, it includes an elevation surface.
Base maps in ArcGIS provide a foundational layer of geographic context for your data. They can include various types of maps, such as:

1. Imagery: Satellite or aerial photographs that provide a realistic view of the landscape.
2. Topographic Maps: Show elevation and terrain features.
3. Street Maps: Detailed road networks and urban features.
4. Dark Gray Canvas: A minimalist map ideal for overlaying other data.
5. Light Gray Canvas: Similar to Dark Gray but with lighter tones, suitable for different visual styles.
6. National Geographic: A thematic map that includes physical and cultural features.
7. OpenStreetMap (OSM): A community-driven map that provides street-level detail.
