Hi Explorussians,

Today's topic is verb aspects, ie. imperfective and perfective verbs.

However, it will NOT be me talking grammar.

It will NOT be a Russian teacher talking grammar either.

It will be random people I chatted in the centre of St. Petersburg.

I got insanely beautiful explanations! I thought everyone around me was a linguist! :)

Enjoy the video!

Всем привет!
Hi everyone!

This is Angelos and Explore Russian.

And the guy behind me is Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin.

I am in the centre of Saint Petersburg.

This place is called "Площадь искусств" (Square of Arts).

What I'm going to do here today…

I've got with me a list with pairs of imperfective

and perfective verbs.

I'm going to approach random people on the street

and ask them what is the difference between

an imperfective and a perfective verb.

Right now, for example, let's ask these ladies here.

Извините, извините. Можно у вас спросить?
Excuse me, excuse me. May I ask you a question?

Кстати, я учу русский язык, да?
By the way, I am learning Russian, ok?

И у меня здесь вот список с глаголами.
And I have a list with verbs here.

Это несовершенный глагол и совершенный глагол.
This is an imperfective verb and this is a perfective verb.

Например, вот, "рисовать" — "нарисовать".
For example, "рисовать - imperfective" — "нарисовать - perfective" (to draw).

Ага.
Yes.

Какая разница? Можно мне дать примеры?
What's the difference? Can you give me examples?

Конкретные предложения.
Specific sentences.

О, давай.
Oh, let's do it.

Русский язык.
The Russian language.

"Рисовать", то есть, это как процесс, то есть
"Рисовать" (to draw - imperfective) is like a process, that is,

"сейчас я рисую".
“I'm drawing now”.

А "нарисовать" - это как завершённый,
And "нарисовать" (to draw - perfective) is like complete,

то есть "я нарисовал".
that is, “I have drawn”.

Хорошо.
Good.
