Here is my understanding of these terms:
1- Remote: The role does NOT need to report to the office at all and the company doesn't care if you do it from home, a cafe or a bar down the street. Out of a 5 day work week, all 5 days are remote with 0 days in the office. A position cannot be called "remote" if a single day of the week is expected to be in an office. No exceptions. You are not expected to keep to any kind of time zone restriction that is not local to you and you are allowed by default to work 100% in the time zone you are physically based in. This is important because in many states (WA, etc.) I'm told by lawyers asking somebody to work a time zone they do not live in is explicitly illegal as a form of bait and switch or violates shift rules. Check your state.
2. Hybrid: The role is expected to split between remote and office, but has the majority of days of the week being remote and not in the office. Out of a 5 day work week, At most 2 of these 5 days are in the office. To be "hybrid" the majority of the work week must still be remote. Simple rule of thumb: A role cannot be called "Hybrid" unless at least 3 days out of 5 are remote, with no exceptions. Example: At least 3 out of 5 days days remote at most 2 days of 5 in the office.
3. Flex: The majority of the time during the week is expected to be in the office but you can have a day or two during the week where you can be work from home. Example: At leas 3 out of 5 days days in office, at most 2 days of 5 remote. Out of a 5 day work week, either 3 or 4 of these days have to be working from an office but the 1-2 other days you could choose. Before the pandemic it was often Flex Friday (Work from home Friday) or Flex Wednesday (as in "No meeting Wednesdays").
4. In Office: Out of a 5 day work week, all 5 days are expected to be in the office.
So lets go over it again based on the numbers of days working remote:
5 of 5 days Remote: Remote
4 of 5 days Remote: Hybrid
3 of 5 days Remote: Hybrid
2 of 5 days Remote: Flex
1 of 5 days Remote: Flex
0 of 5 days Remote: Onsite
Confused? Lets go over that again, but from the perspective of when they have to be in the office:
5 of 5 days Onsite: Onsite
4 of 5 days Onsite: Flex
3 of 5 days Onsite: Flex
2 of 5 days Onsite: Hybrid
1 of 5 days Onsite: Hybrid
0 of 5 days Onsite: Remote
I hope that educates you all.
