Air Pollution:
" The contamination of the atmosphere by toxic pollutants present at concentrations above their natural levels which pose adverse effects on living things and the ecosystem in general."
The substances that are responsible for air pollution are known as air pollutants.
• It can occur in solid, liquid or gaseous form.
• It also can come from natural as well as human sources.
Air Pollutants can be classified as,
•Primary Pollutants
• Secondary Pollutants
Primary Pollutant:
A primary pollutant is an air pollutant emitted from a source directly into the atmosphere.
Such as,
Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂), Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbon (HC), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Particulate Matter (PM), Lead (Pb) etc.
Secondary Pollutant:
Secondary pollutants formed in the atmosphere as a result of the chemical or physical interactions between the primary pollutants and other atmospheric components.
• Secondary pollutants are not emitted directly.
• They form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact.
Such as,
Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄), Sulfur Trioxide (SO₃), Nitric Acid (HNO₃), Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Ozone (O₃), Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂), Peroxy Acetyl Nitrate (PAN) etc.
Effects:
Secondary pollutants harm the environment by making photochemical smog and acid rain. They also responsible for global warming.
Photochemical Smog:
When NO𝘹 and VOCs react with sunlight to form secondary pollutants, like O₃, PANs and HNO₃ creating a brown haze above cities. These secondary pollutants are the components of Photochemical Smog.
Acid Rain:
SO₂ and NO𝘹 emissions react with water vapor in the atmosphere and form acids (H₂SO₄, HNO₃) that is deposited to the surface of earth through precipitation such as rain, snow or sleet.
Global Warming:
Greenhouse gases (NOx, O₃, CO₂, H₂O) cause global warming by trapping heat from the Sun in the Earth’s atmosphere.
