This is my first video in my series for mental health awareness month,

I want to structure this video in a simple way, so that it is easy to follow.First I’m going to talk briefly about what depression is, and about what causes it. Next I’m going to talk about why this makes depression a ‘disorder’, what is bad about it. Next I’m going to talk about what you as an individual can do if you think you have depression, or somebody close to you has it. Finally I’m going to talk about some of the treatments usually offered for depression.

So firstly, why is Depression, and what causes it? Depression is a disorder that changes the way somebody thinks, feels and acts. As I spoke about in my introductory video, mental health is different for every person, so a disorder like Depression can affect people in different ways. Most commonly, however, depression makes people feel sad for a long period of time, sometimes referred to as low mood. Just like how Depression can affect differnet people in many different ways, there can be lots of different causes for depression, stress can cause it, or something major happening in life like losing a loved one, or some people are just more likely to get it because of their genes.

Why is Depression a disorder, and why is it so bad? Depression is in my opinion a disorder because it can cause people to lose interest in things they usually enjoy. For example somebody might have loved painting before getting depression, but now they don’t want to paint anymore. This loss of energy and interest can cause sufferers to do things slower, like speaking or moving. Sufferers might also get annoyed and angry more easily. People suffering from depression might also struggle to concentrate, and can also have anxiety symptoms meaning they might not want to leave the house or do things which usually interest them.

In the third part of this video I want to talk about what you as an individual can do if you think you have depression, or somebody close to you has it. The first thing is to reassure yourself if you think you have it that it is not your fault. Depression cannot be spread, it’s not like a cold. The best thing you as an individual can do is talk about your feelings to your friends or family or a doctor, or try to ask the person who you think might have it to do the same. But don’t push them, because this might make symptoms worse. Exercising, eating well, and getting enough sleep are all important as well.

Now let’s talk about The treatments a doctor might recommend for depression. A doctor might recommend talking therapies, which is where you talk about how you feel to an expert who gives you ideas on how to cope with depression. Certain medicines might also be prescribed by a doctor which boost chemicals in the brain to make people with depression feel less sad, and to want to do things that they used to do. Research shows that overall depression is treatable, but it takes time.
