The life of Marci Bowers runs through a prestigious path. Since she graduated from the University of Minnesota, Bowers has been considered a prodigy in the fields of gynecology and pelvic surgery. Her story illuminates what coming out as transgender is like, especially in the medical field. Most transgender people’s lives have outsized contact with the medical profession compared to cisgender people. For this reason, documenting transgender stories in medicine is very important to realize how the profession views trans individuals and that transgender people should handle transgender care. The stories of Dr. Bowers's care and skill emphasize this fact as she details her own transition struggles as well as the hardships and joys that come with transitioning in the culture of the late 20th century and the early 21st.
Bowers has been able to shed further light on earlier resources for surgery such as the clinic at Mt. San Raphael staffed by Dr. Bieber in Trinidad. Bowers trained under Bieber and took over the clinic when he retired. She gives us vital information as to who he was and what he was like during his practice as a vital part of Colorado trans history and national trans history as he was, for quite some time, the only doctor in the United States performing Gender Affirmation Surgeries. Dr. Bowers has lived a very public and very important life that has been a spearhead for trans rights and trans access to medical care.
