Alice was Farmer Brown's goat. She was a pretty goat, gave good milk, and Farmer Brown and Mrs. Brown adored her. Alice was a perfect goat in every way but one—she was just too curious for her own good.
One day, Farmer Brown was milking Alice, humming a tune.
"You're such a good goat, Alice," he said, patting her side.
Mrs. Brown appeared, carrying a basket of laundry. "Don't you think she’s the best, dear?"
"Absolutely," Farmer Brown replied. "As long as she stays out of trouble."
Alice blinked innocently, plotting her next adventure. The neighbor's grass always looked greener, and Alice wanted to see if it was true. She found a gap in the fence and squeezed through. The grass was the same, but Alice liked it better anyway.
"Alice!" Farmer Brown shouted, waving his hat. "You bad goat!"
Another day, Alice saw the garden gate open. Delicious green plants beckoned her.
"Are they as tasty as they look?" she wondered aloud and trotted in. The plants were delightful, and Alice munched happily.
Farmer Brown found her in the middle of his garden. "My carrots! My tomatoes! Bad Alice!" he hollered.
One sunny afternoon, Alice saw something white flying over the fence. "What’s that?" she thought, and trotted over to investigate. She found herself among Mrs. Brown's freshly washed clothes. Alice took a nibble and spat it out.
"Oh no!" Mrs. Brown shrieked. "Look at my wash! Bad, bad Alice!"
One warm day, Alice saw the house door open. "What’s inside?" she wondered and walked up the steps. Her head hit a pan—bang! Her tail knocked over glasses—crash!
Mrs. Brown screamed, "Help! Alice is in the kitchen!"
Farmer Brown dashed in. "Bad Alice! A goat shouldn’t be in the kitchen! Get out!"
He tried to lead her out, but Alice just looked at him with big, sad eyes. "I can go up the steps, but I can't go down," she seemed to say. Farmer Brown pushed and pulled, but Alice wouldn't budge. Then he had an idea. He laid big boards over the steps, creating a ramp. Alice trotted down.
"Good Alice," Farmer Brown sighed. "But please, stay out of the kitchen!"
One day, Alice vanished. Farmer Brown and Mrs. Brown searched everywhere: the barn, the field, the neighbor’s field. Finally, they heard the dog barking and followed the sound.
"Baa! Baa!" came a sound from a big hole. There was Alice, stuck at the bottom, looking miserable.
Farmer Brown scratched his head. "How do we get her out?"
Neighbors came with ropes, but the dirt was too soft. Policemen and firemen arrived. Finally, someone had an idea. They pumped water into the hole. As the water rose, Alice began to swim. Soon, she was high enough for the men to pull her out.
After that, Alice wasn’t as curious. She stayed where she belonged and was always a good goat.
Farmer Brown patted her head. "Good Alice. Just please, no more adventures."
Mrs. Brown laughed. "Who knows what she’ll think of next?"
Alice just blinked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity. But for now, she was content to stay close to home.
