The thought of coming to a residential substance abuse treatment center like Choices Recovery can be very scary for many people. Often, this fear can keep a person from seeking the professional help that they need to overcome addiction. Though life in addiction is hectic and chaotic, there is a certain sense of security that is felt in maintaining a routine that is centered on using drugs or alcohol even as that routine is destroying the person’s life and relationships. People struggling with addiction don’t want to change, because change is scary. They are used to leading their lifestyle, and anything else is unknown and frightening. But if they wish to survive, they absolutely must face those fears and move past them.
Keisha has been using for a long time. She started smoking marijuana at a young age, and within a few years, her substance abuse had spiraled completely out of control. “By the time I was 15-16, I had started pretty much doing everything,” she admits. Having such a long career of substance abuse, it’s no surprise that Keisha was looking for reasons to continue on that dangerous and deadly path rather than seeking help for her addiction. “I have a two-year-old son, and I have a salon,” she continues. “I didn’t want to go because I didn’t know how to take off work, and I didn’t want to miss out on my kid. But, I knew that what I was doing at the time, I was only going to end up losing it all.” Keisha finally stopped finding excuses and took that step, facing her fear of change and reaching out for help.
Another fear that may keep people from coming to a treatment center is the understandable fear of detox. For the person whose addiction has progressed to the point of a physical dependency, withdrawal can be very painful. In some extreme cases, withdrawal symptoms can be so severe that they are actually life threatening. “I struggled so hard,” Keisha shares. “I knew I was going to kick really hard. I tried doing it at home, and I couldn’t.” While discomfort from withdrawal can never be fully removed, our highly trained nurses and certified withdrawal specialists do everything they can to help ease that discomfort as much as possible. The compassion and understanding shown by our staff alone is a great help in getting through the detox process. “The people that work here really helped me get through it,” Keisha explains. “They actually cared, and that meant a lot to me. I’ve been to other facilities, and it’s like all they cared about was a paycheck.” She found out that, even though change can be difficult, she was not alone in her journey and that there were people that she could depend on for support and encouragement.
At Choices, we know that recovery from addiction is much more than getting clean and sober. It is about finding the tools and skills that will allow our patients to make a complete lifestyle transformation. It is about changing the way we view the world and handle our fears and emotions. It is about making healthy decisions, and working towards building a brighter and more positive future.
