I have been voicing professionally since 1990 and for 25 years have been using the Neumann U87 as my main mic in the voice booth. The mic I started with was the Beyer 201. I rang up the local BBC local radio station and asked what mic the presenter was using - as I liked the sound of it. This was around 1990. A quick call to the local music shop in Swindon followed, and they surprisingly had one in stock.
There's a myth that dynamic mics don't need pop shields (the exception in this test is the Electrovoice RE50) or that dynamic mics are no good for voiceovers - all rubbish! You will need a pop shield for something like a Beyer 201 more than you will for a larger condenser type mic.

Tone wise I love the Beyer 201, the Neumann has a fabulous smooth sound, the Rode NT2A is exceptional and gives the Neumann a run for its money. The NT1A, SM58 and the Electrovoice all lack a bit of lower frequency oomph.
