We discuss the difference between "fungal acne" and regular acne.
"Fungal acne" has become a topic of interest for many people over the last year. However, it is relatively uncommon compared to regular acne. The proper medical term is Malassezia (pityrosporum) folliculitis. In this video, we discuss some helpful tips to identify "fungal acne"!
"Fungal acne" is treated with topical ketoconazole shampoo (leave on for 10 minutes and wash off) or anti-fungal creams. If it covers a large area of the body, it is best to treat with oral medications that require a prescription.

Regular acne can look similar but is usually not itchy. Over the counter, it is best treated with retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid. Retinoids should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
