LAIKA reached out and wanted to collaborate with me in order to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of ParaNorman. In true spooky fashion they hired me to recreate a scene from the movie in live action which features a ghost dog played by your favorite internet dog, Spence. So sit back and queue that spooky music as I walk you through the behind the scenes of how we recreated ParaNorman in live action!

As you know, last year I made a video in collaboration with LAIKA to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of ParaNorman. I basically reshot a scene from ParaNorman all in live action and put my own little twist on it by gender bending the two leading roles, Norman and Neil. The scene also featured Neil’s long dead ghost doggo Bub, who was of course played by your favorite acting dog, Spence. So cue those spooky ghost sound effects and let’s get to it!
Now every shoot starts with pre-production, and this one was no different. Though I did have a tight turn around with this one as LAIKA wanted to release these scenes in mid October. So that gave me only three weeks of pre-production to pull this off.
While I was busy working away on all my other prep work, like making a production binder, my casting director was hard at work putting up a casting call for our three characters, Norman, Neil, and Mitch. Now as I mentioned earlier, I wanted to put a little twist on the scene and decided to gender bend Norman and Neil.
Another key element in pre-production was getting the wardrobe accurate. After all, we were trying to match the scene exactly, so wardrobe stylist Natalie Lynch went above and beyond, making sure every details was accurate down to the logo on Neil’s jacket and Mitch’s name written on his underwear. She even made the keychain on Norman’s backpack as well as painstakingly hand painted items so they would be perfect replicas of the wardrobe in the original film.
We started the shoot bright and early and our first shot was actually getting the plate we’d be comping the green screen shot of Spence on. Because we were making a shot for shot remake, production design has to be spot on. So our production designer Dana had to have a sharp eye and use her limited resources wisely.
Besides set design, another critical element to pulling this shot off was making sure we measured the camera height and distance so we could match them in the future when we shoot Spence on green screen. So our trusty camera assistant Raquel made sure to record all the measurements for future reference.
While we were shooting the plate Katie and Monique had their hair and makeup done by the fabulous makeup artist Marisa, so they were ready to go over the blocking of the scene. Once we had the basic blocking down it was time to talk character motivation, because each piece of blocking has an emotional reasoning behind it. Next it was on to doing lots and lots of rehearsals to make sure we nailed it perfectly.
Finally we were ready to shoot the scene. Now in order to shoot the backyard portion of the scene efficiently we broke it down into three parts. The first part of the backyard scene is where Norman and Neil first spot Bub, the second part is the section where Norman sits on the bench, and the final third part was everything after Neil knocks himself in the head with the stick.
Once we finished shooting the backyard, it was on to shooting the scene in the front of the house with Mitch, played by the extremely talented Aron Groben. By this time we were losing daylight fast but luckily while we were getting the mains shots of Neil and Mitch in the driveway, Dana and her team were busy at work repurposing all the set dressing from the backyard into the front for our final wide shot.
