Little Women #3 "Jo's Boyfriend" (1981)
"Jo's Boyfriend" is the third episode of the 1981 Japanese animated series based on Louisa May Alcott's novel, "Little Women," and follows "Christmas Eve" and "Angels in Boots," two episodes previously uploaded to this channel. All are dubbed in English. Here Jo finally meets Lawrie, the teenage boy living in the large house next door, as well as his grandfather, Mr. Lawrence, and begins a friendship between the two families. Beth is invited to practice her piano playing on the Lawrence grand piano, but she's too scared to accept. There's a stark, almost austere quality to the settings, which gives it a real 19th century feel, although, truth to tell, the walls in such homes were never as bare as the production design here makes them out to be. Still, the episode follows the development of the characters' relationships with great care and gentility, allowing things to unfold at their proper pace. How many American literary adaptations—done as animation—have shown such restraint?
