All of T-Mobile's newer phones (besides iPhones) now do not prompt you for an unlock code when you put a different SIM in, instead forcing you to use T-Mobile's own Device Unlock app. But it is possible to use the app to unlock the device without filing a request with T-Mobile. This service is also doable for newer phones from Family Mobile (sold through Walmart) that also come locked, and have the app preinstalled.
