Segment Two
Glaciers Carve the Land
"Glaciers Carve the Land" introduces students to the process of glaciation and the erosional landforms produced by moving ice. Although continental glaciers are mentioned, the majority of the segment is devoted to alpine glaciation. Film footage from Alaska and Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada provides students with as firsthand look at active glaciers in terms of ice movement and erosional products. A walk through Rock Creek Canyon in Montana introduces students to glacial features left by a retreating glacier. Spectacular views in Yosemite Valley serve to illustrate the power of moving ice. The segment's objective is to introduce students to the power of moving ice within glaciers and the erosion that results.
