Vaporwave is many different things. According to Wikipedia “Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music and an Internet meme defined by its appropriation of 1980s and 1990s mood music typically sampling or manipulating tracks. Its surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology, and advertising of previous decades.”
The genre is truly fascinating and soothing to a late 80’s early 90’s kid like myself, as it evokes nostalgia to childhood, much like a taste or a scent that you haven’t experienced in years. Yet the sound is empty—and that is important. The individual experiencing the sensation places in the empty box their own lived experience—filling it with their own truth—which is why I believe it resonates so much with today's Millenials and Zoomers. When I think of vaporwave I remember the years of dialup, MS paint, going to OMSI, and using their colorful iMac G3’s to play where in the world is Carmen San Diego. I think of POGS and action figure slime...of PS1’s and N64, these memories of a time long ago bounce around my head as I hear MACINTOSH PLUS or Ecco Jams vol 1.
