The science and clinical practice of HRV and HRV Biofeedback continue to expand rapidly. This talk will present new areas of interest that are emerging. While the utility of HRV as an indicator of stress (e.g. depression, anxiety, PTSD) has been recognized for many years, recent findings that will be explored in this presentation are the significance of HRV in prognostication, progression, and stage of chronic illnesses that have autonomic dysregulation in common. The validity of ultra-short (10 seconds-1 minute) cardiac interbeat interval recordings being tested for predicting cancer survival and for estimating standard length recordings (5- and 15-minute resting, overnight, 24 hour, and longer) will be explored. Evidence will be shared showing that HRV is an essential aspect of both phasic and tonic cardiovascular human adaption to social and physical environmental challenges through physiological reflex and voluntary responses of the autonomic nervous system.

Dr. Ginsberg earned a BS in Biology cum laude from Yale, a Master’s in Anthropology from Brandeis, another Master’s in Cognitive Psychology from Boston College, and a doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Memphis (TN). He has advocated for Autonomic Self-Regulation as a self-empowering mind-body practice for PTSD and chronic pain for over 20 years. He is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and has practiced hospital-based and private Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology for 25 years. He retired from the Columbia VA Health Care System in 2019 after 15 years there as a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Clinical Health Research Scientist. Currently he appointments as adjunct faculty at Saybrook University and Research Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Ginsberg has been a PI, Co-PI or Co-I on research grants from the DoD, VA, and NIH studying heart rate variability (HRV) and HRV biofeedback (HRVB). Currently, he has collaborations with researchers at Duke School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Ginsberg has authored or co-authored more than 70 scientific publications on Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology, and HRV. He served as a scientist reviewer of research grant proposals for NIH, VA, and DoD, and edited or reviewed numerous published scientific articles. He has given presentations on HRV and HRVB at scientific meetings, academic seminars, and webinars. From 2021-2023, Dr. Ginsberg was Chairperson of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Complimentary and Integrative Task Force on Biofeedback. He has been a Board Member of the Heart Rcate Variability Institute since 2022 and maintains research collaborations at Duke University School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Ginsberg is also an Independent Study Monitor on a University of Southern California NIH-R01 project examining the remediating effects of HRVB biofeedback on regulation of affect and physiology, as well as a Mentor on an NIOSH-K grant application by a University of Southern California post-doctoral fellow to study effects of worker burnout on HRV.
