Today, over 8 billion people inhabit our planet. However, if we looked back between 800,000 and 900,000 years ago, the scenario was drastically different. Recent scientific discoveries have unveiled a critical period in human evolution, highlighting a significant speciation event. Researchers are now illuminating a previously unknown era in our evolutionary history. According to a new study, early humans, specifically 'Homo erectus,' nearly faced extinction less than a million years ago due to harsh ice age conditions. Genetic evidence indicates that between 813,000 and 930,000 years ago, our ancestors endured a severe bottleneck, losing approximately 98.7% of their breeding population. This bottleneck was so intense that our ancestors' survival seemed improbable, relying on sheer determination and a bit of luck. The study, titled 'Genomic inference of a severe human bottleneck during the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition,' reveals that the human population remained small but stable for over 100,000 years. This prolonged period of low population size contributed to the divergence of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans.
