Medications are best taken in consultation with a doctor - this is not intended as medical advice, but simply as general knowledge—because we all deserve to know what options exist when it comes to contraception and abortion, as part of our sexual and reproductive health and rights, and so that we know that we can seek the medical care we need by consulting a doctor should such a situation ever arise 🙌🏽
Birth control pills are a hormonal medication taken daily as a primary form of contraception to prevent the body from being capable of getting pregnant they work by stopping ovulation, and/or thickening cervical mucus and/or thinning the uterine lining, to prevent fertilization and/or implantation from being able to occur. When taken correctly, birthcontrol pills are highly effective at preventing pregnancy- but they cannot be used to terminate a pregnancy.
Emergency contraception, often colloquially know as the morning after pill, is an emergency method that exists for when a primary method of contraception was not in place. In order for it to be effective it should be taken as soon after intercourse as possible, (it is not effective beyond around 120 hours after Intercourse) It works by intercepting or delaying ovulation and / or by interfering with sperm movement making it less likely that sperm will fertilize an egg. It is less effective at preventing pregnancy than using a primary form of contraception such as condoms, birth control pills or IUDs, and therefore should not be used as one’s regular form of birth control but rather only in emergencies. It is not the same as the abortion pill.
You can think of abortion pills or medical abortion as termination— it is only taken after pregnancy has already occured, and they work by blocking the hormones necessary for maintaining a pregancy, and stimulating the uterus to expel the pregnancy. It is not the same thing as birth control or emergency contraception.
