Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: My guitar studies this year, (of freestyle folk and folk jazz along with guitar players like Stefan Grossman, John Renbourn and Duck Baker), have introduced me to the great sounds of the 11th and 13th chords. I haven't got too much experience with these chords, and I was wondering if you'd perhaps consider doing a basic video about them. Thanks for all of your hard work you do for the guitar players following you on YouTube. And, thanks for reading my question.
Charles -- San Anselmo, CA.
A: The 11th and 13th chords are part of a category of chord known as extended chords. The use of these chords can really offer color to a progression, making even the simplest of chord progressions sound anywhere from having a lot more presence around the tonal range of the harmony, to sometimes even a downright startling effect upon their appearance in a piece of music, (depending upon how and where the chords get placed). In this video lesson I will move through a number of ideas with 11th & 13th chords, and give you a good concept of how these chords have a natural tendency to resolve progressions in some very interesting and colorful ways.
