This video will give you the glimpse of New York in the 19th century. All artworks in this video clip are currently in the USA and were done by American artists except a couple of them. I am planning to create and upload the other versions which have original aspect ratios of images and show the titles, dates of the artworks and names of artist.
Anyhow, as you may know, 1898 was the birth year of the Modern New York city when 5 boroughs of the city, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island were established. Counties of New York, Richmond, Kings and Queens developed one municipal government under a New City Charter.
Here I need to clarify the New York City before 1898 was referring to "Manhattan" strictly speaking. But I tried to name NYC in a modern sense for modern viewers. Also I would like to let you know that the backgrounds of many artworks in the video are old New York (Manhattan). If it is not, I made notes in the video. FYI, as Manhattan was the old New York, Staten Island was Richmond, Brooklyn was Kings, and Queens was Queens.
This video clip comprises 4 sections
1. New York Bay and Rivers in the 19th century
2. Central Park in the 19th century
3. New York Streets and Buildings in the 19th century
4. Life and People in 19th century New York
Through the artworks, you may time-travel to the past momentarily. Please enjoy the New York in the 19th century with smooth jazz.
[Fun Facts]
1. Do you know about an amazing and unbelievable fact about St.Paul Chapel in NYC (7:03) ? It was in 1766 when the chapel opened (re-built in 1790) and is one of the oldest buildings in NYC. Also this chapel was famous as the worship place of George Washington. But here is a more amazing story;
"After the attacks of September 11, 2001, St. Paul’s Chapel, which sits directly across the street from the World Trade Center site, suffered no physical damage.(quoted from https://www.trinitywallstreet.org/abo...)"
2. Do you know about one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York in the 19th century (6:26)? It was the Crystal Palace, known as the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, located in 5th Ave and 40-42 Street and opened in 1853. It was an exhibition building but its progressive, avant-garde, and extravagantly decorated styles enticed travelers. But sadly, after 5 years, it was destroyed by fire in 1858 and now there is the Bryant Park.
