Over the past two generations, “between consenting adults” became the mantra of a new sexual ethic. Taboos were discarded, and commandments were scrapped, but one single rule was supposed to ensure both liberation and equality: consent.
But the #MeToo era proved that “consent” alone is woefully inadequate as the sole ethical standard. There’s still something deeply wrong with Americans’ relationships: Young people are dating less and marrying less, and young women do not feel safer.
Author Christine Emba argues that we need a better sexual ethic, one that goes beyond consent. Join her and AEI’s Timothy P. Carney to discuss her new book, Rethinking Sex: A Provocation (Sentinel, 2022).
