The future for O-RAN is bright. Increased competition brings both technological and business use case benefits, such as a wider ecosystem with more vendors offering solutions and lower costs for service providers. But there are complex challenges due to all the new types of tests the O-RAN approach is mandating. Each component of an O-RAN system needs to be tested in a lab, before going live, using emulated real-world, real-time conditions to determine if it will function independently as its own unit, with adjacent blocks, and as part of a complete end-to-end system. In this MWC 2023 interview, James Kimery, VP of Product Management for Spirent Communications, looks more closely at these challenges and explains how Spirent’s O-RAN solutions test multi-vendor interoperability under real-world conditions in these varied configurations via an automated, single UI platform, so operators can deliver the services and functionality that their customers require.
