With the introduction of iOS 7 in 2013, Apple aggressively moved away from a skeuomorphic aesthetic, to what is commonly called “flat design”. The biggest casualty with this transition was the loss of drop shadows.
Drop shadows are an essential tool for any UI designer and developer. They help add contrast and dimension, improve visual hierarchy, and can make certain interactions clearer. Thankfully, drop shadows have been coming back to UI design over the past few years.
